RICHARD WILHELM:

Richard Wilhelm became known as an untiring cultural mediator, as well as for his translations which brought the great Chinese classical works to the West. He translated CONFUCIUS, LAOTSE, other classical texts of DAOISM and, most importantly, the I CHING, THE BOOK OF CHANGES.

Born in Stuttgart in 1873, Richard Wilhelm went to Qingdao in 1899 as a young missionary of the East Asia mission at a time when the territory was leased to Germany.

In Qingdao he founded a school, which still exists today and bears his name as well as a hospital.

He was an unusual missionary for throughout his entire life he never baptized a single Chinese. Instead he converted to Chinese wisdom.
